1950: IIT Kharagpur became the first IIT.
1959–1960: IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Delhi were established.
2008: The Government approved the creation of eight new IITs.
The same year, IIT Jodhpur (formerly IIT Rajasthan) was established, along with IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Patna, IIT Ropar.
2009: IIT Mandi and IIT Indore followed.
